HistoryHotel The Nymph is situated in one of the oldest buildings in Brielle. It was build between 1585 and 1592. The building, with it rich history, used to be a hotel and later received the name “Nymph” just like the April 1st monument that was revealed by King Willem the III in 1872. It then was 300 years ago that the “watergeuzen” captured Brielle from Spain. The monument is situated behind the house at the “Asylplein” where in the past the old and poor sailors spent their latter days.
The house was also named the “Tromphuis”, after admiral – general Maarten Harpetz Tromp (1589-1653) who was born in a house behind the building Nymph. This house was famous for its magnificent plaster ceiling. It is the oldest in the Netherlands and dates from 1600. In 1866 the modern history begins and the coffee house “Admiraal Tromp” was established. From 1873 the building is used as hotel “De Nymph”. From the moment that the building has been used as house in 1977, it was renovated in 2009 to continue as a hotel again. |
